Meeting in Wayne Co. concerning bringing coal ash to landfill

Hundreds attended a meeting Wednesday night in Jesup to ask questions and raise concerns about a commercial landfill in Wayne County.
Many wanted answers over the company’s permit request to add more railroad lines into the 2,000 acre landfill. They worry the company will expand to bring thousands of tons of solid waste, including coal ash.
A company representative told the audience the rail line would lessen the amount of truck traffic in and out of the plant.
Neighbors and county leaders wonder what kind of impact the coal ash and additional trash could have.
“If they utilize all the land they have and they start bringing in municipal waste, coal ash is our main concern, to the tune of 10,000 tons a day, we’ll be the biggest landfill on the East Coast,” said County Commission Chair Kevin Copeland.
The Army Corps of Engineers and EPD are studying the impact the rail line and expansion could have.
