Heart of Georgia-Altamaha’s unemployment rate rises to 7 percent in July

The Georgia Department of Labor announced today that the unemployment rate in the Heart of Georgia-Altamaha region in July was 7 percent, up two-tenths of a percentage point from 6.8 percent in June. The rate in July 2015 was 8.1 percent.
The rate rose as the number of initial claims for unemployment insurance increased by 509, or 43.8 percent, to 1,670 in July. Most of the increase came in manufacturing and administrative and support services, which includes temporary staffing agencies. And, over the year, claims were up by 103, or 6.6 percent, from 1,567 in July 2015.
Also, there was an overall increase of 127 unemployed workers, as the labor force declined by 1,459 to 116,001. There were also 1,586 fewer employed workers in July.
Metro Gainesville had the lowest area jobless rate at 4.6 percent, while the Heart of Georgia- Altamaha region had the highest at 7 percent.  
Meanwhile, Georgia’s seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate for July was 5 percent, down from 5.1 percent in June. It was 5.7 percent in July 2015.

In July, 940 new job openings in the Heart of Georgia-Altamaha region were posted on Employ Georgia. Throughout the state, 69,064 new job openings were posted.
