Family and friends gathered this afternoon as the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department held a Badge Pinning Ceremony at the Savannah Civic Center.
Seventeen new SCMPD officers, comprised of two women and 15 men, graduated from SCMPD’s Patrol School. They completed an eight-week training course, which followed 11 weeks of training at the Georgia Public Safety Training Center in Garden City.
Today the new officers’ family members and friends joined them on stage for the Badge Pinning Ceremony. Congratulations to officers, Richard Bennett, Amanda Brooner, Kyle Brown, David Carrier Jr., Marquis Dillard, Jeremy Fregeau Justin Gause, Jacob Gililland, Cody Jepsen, Ian Kenny, Michael King, Shane Larson, Mario Martin, Parker Spivey, Sheena Street, Evan Tersigni and Donald White.
Chief Lumpkin thanked the families of the officers for entrusting their loved ones with the SCMPD and spoke to the new officers about the importance of community policing. “You are going to be out there in our streets, patrolling this community. Police exist to help people solve problems. You must have connectivity with the neighborhoods to reduce crime and keep people safe. That connectivity starts with you, but it is a shared responsibility between the police and the citizens. Always treat people with dignity and respect.”
