Dublin VA to Host CTAE Career Day for High School Students

The Carl Vinson VA Medical Center and the State of Georgia’s Career Technical and Agricultural Education (CTAE) program will host a career day for area high school students on March 28 from 9:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. in the medical center’s auditorium. Students from local high schools will be able to visit booths and tables representing diverse health care disciplines and support services practiced at the VA.
Event coordinator Dr. Corshea Thomas said that the event not only offers students a chance to learn more about areas in which they would like to work in the future, it also provides VA yet another chance to network with the Middle Georgia health care community.
“By hosting such events VA helps to develop future health care professionals and establish firm relationships with the medical community that we need to ensure that our veterans get the best care from VA possible. It also gives us a chance to entice students to consider a career at VA,” Thomas said.
Career Technical and Agricultural Education (CTAE) began as a curriculum modification process in combination with the Governor’s Strategic Industries and Workforce Development Task Force recommendations. In a collaborative effort involving secondary and post-secondary school instructors, determinations were made based on what knowledge and skills are necessary for future successes in the Georgia workforce.  CTAE performance standards were condensed to reflect the most essential elements of the curricula designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary for career readiness and success no matter what trade or professional career students choose after high school graduation.
Thomas said that by getting representatives of the various health care professions and students together in one place, students will be able to get first-hand information about their areas of interest and what it is like to actually work in the health care field and at VA. According to Thomas, students from Dublin High School, Laurens County high schools, and many others from Middle Georgia will be represented.
