On Thursday, May 16, 2014, at approximately 8:36 pm, the Hazlehurst Police Department and Jeff Davis County Sheriff’s Department responded to multiple gunshots at a residence on Harrison Nook in Hazlehurst, Georgia. Upon arrival, Officers discovered two (2) individuals had received gunshot wounds. The Hazlehurst Police Department requested assistance from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Douglas office.
Javonnie Mondrae Chambers, B/M, 41, and his mother, Mary L. Chambers, B/F, 64, were transported from the scene by ambulance where Javonnie Chambers was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Jeff Davis Hospital. Mary Chambers died while en-route to the Memorial Hospital Trauma Center in Savannah, Georgia. The GBI Crime Lab conducted autopsies on both victims.
Investigators suspect that Javonnie Chambers was the primary target of the shooting and that Mary Chambers was not a target of the shooting. The residence was hit with multiple gunshots. Also inside the residence at the time of the shooting were two (2) small children, ages 2 and 4. During the shooting, the children and another adult went and took cover in another part of the residence and were not injured.
Chief Ken Williams would like to commend Hazlehurst Police Department Investigator David Moore and GBI Special Agent Jason Nipper for their hard work and dedication in this investigation. The investigation is still on-going; therefore, no other details will be released at this time.
