Hazlehurst Railroad Overpass requires extended detour

On Monday, June 10, McLendon Enterprises Inc. will close US 23/State Route (SR) 19/ Hollingsworth Boulevard to thru-traffic, allowing construction of an overpass bridge over the existing Norfolk-Southern Railroad Crossing in Jeff Davis County.
Traffic will use a three-mile detour for a tentative time-frame of 395 days. Local access on either end of the work zone will be maintained during construction.
Official signed detour routes during construction are:

  • E. Jarman Street/Golden Isles Parkway
  • S. Cromartie Street/US 221
  • S. Tallahassee Street/US 221
  • E. Jefferson Street/US 23 BUS

This $6.35 million project covers part of US 23 in Jeff Davis County with current conditions including heavy truck volumes and frequent delays for commercial and emergency vehicles resulting from rail switching operations. The proposed improvement should reduce stops between areas north and south of Hazlehurst, as well as for drivers and emergency officials.
