Sea turtle named for Silas Edenfield

TYBEE ISLAND, GA  -

A pre-schooler with incurable cancer met his mascot Saturday morning. Silas the boy said hello, and goodbye, to Silas the turtle.

Doctors could heal the turtle after the cold-blooded animal was found ill from sudden exposure to chilly water.

But after 23 rounds of chemotherapy and six surgeries, treatment for liver cancer, there isn't anything more medicine can do for the boy.

"He's been fighting cancer for the last 14 months," Silas Edenfield's father, Archie Edenfield, said. "And pretty much the whole time he just latched on to sea turtles."

A loggerhead rehabilitated and released by the Georgia Sea Turtle Center was named in the boy's honor and released on Tybee's southern shore.

"It's a very special thing for us to release a turtle, probably the most precious gift we could give somebody" Sea Turtle Center Director Dr. Terry Norton said. "We wanted to donate the release to Silas."

And it means a lot to the Edenfields, who say cancer treatment had been an isolating experience at times.

Silas' mother, Jessica Edenfield, remembers "just walking through the store, and it just doesn't seem right that the whole world just continues to go on when Silas has cancer."

"Just knowing that people care is really encouraging," she said.

Silas the turtle has been fitted with a beacon. To track his progress, go to www.georgiaseaturtlecenter.org.

Currington turns himself into authorities denies allegations

Country singer Billy Currington, 39, turned himself in to Savannah authorities Thursday afternoon at the county jail, where he was booked on charges of making terroristic threats and abuse of an elderly person.

Currington was free hours later after posting $27,700 bond, Sheriff's Cpl. Rhonda Bryant Elleby told AP. Each of the charges is a felony punishable by one to five years in prison.

Police, who believe the singer may have videotaped the incident that got him in trouble — a confrontation with a 70-year-old boat captain passing by his Georgia coastal house — got a warrant to search Currington's home Tuesday and seized four digital video files, 27 digital photos and a memory card.

In a court filing April 19, the attorney said Currington, whose hits include Pretty Good At Drinkin' Beer and That's How Country Boys Roll, denied "each and every allegation."

CHATHAM COUNTY, GA -
Country music star and Rincon, GA native Billy Currington has been indicted on charges of 'Terroristic threats' and abuse of an elderly person. Documents show the indictment stems from an incident on April 15th involving Charles Harvey Ferrelle on Tybee Island.Currington turned himself in to the Chatham County Jail shortly after 4:30 Thursday, sources say.

The police reports from the Tybee police department, and it reads like something out of a reality show. According to the documents, one of the witnesses heard Currington say to the victim, Harvey Ferrelle, "Me and my brother[s] will find you and [blank] you up!" Three different witnesses all had similar recollections of the incident, causing police to categorize it as an "open and close case." Witnesses report loud yelling, and a clear consistent recollection of the event.

Police Narrative: "I was dispatched to A.J's Dockside about an altercation on the water with verbal threats on April 1 5th, 2013. I arrived, A.J's was closed but I was granted access. I walked through the restaurant and onto the dock. I was greeted by three people, 2 white males and '1 white female. Mr. Ferrelle, the victim, explained that as he was motoring his boat through the middle of the river, a white male, stocky build with curly hair and a white, long sleeve T-shirt was hollering and screaming at him from the shore of a home off the Catalina Drive area. The screaming was vulgar and threatening to include the statements " Me and my brother[s] will find you and f**k you up! We will finish you off if we catch you alone."

This unnerved him and he proceeded away from the irate person who was hollering from shore. Mr. Ferrelle finished his boat tour with the couple from Canada. As he swung through the middle of the river, the abuse started again. The party was now holding a video camera. Mr. Ferrelle pulled into the A.J's dock. The party from shore then motored up in a boat with a red base. He was stating that Mr. Ferrelle had no permit. The abuse increased with more threats of physical violence and the threat to "finish him off' Mr. Ferrelle stated he was calling the police."

The Savannah-Chatham Metro Police say the incident occurred while Currington was on his boat in the waters off Tybee Island. The accuser claims Currington and his party were 'flocking' to his docks located off the island, a Metro Police spokesperson confirmed. Police say Currington was NOT arrested as a result of the incident. Tybee Island police were also involved in the investigation. A bench warrant was issued for Currington's arrest.

News of the Currington incident went nationwide Wednesday night, with many fans siding with the singer.  Several Tybee neighbors who describe Currington as 'friendly and very polite'. Several residents we spoke with were surprised by the charges.

Many loyal fans immediately took to Twitter:

Jleighanson: "I am just having such a hard time thinking about this Billy Currington situation. I met him a few years ago and he was so sweet! Still a fan"

BarronSheila @billycurrington "Don't let this mess get u down!! We love and support you!!"

Currington Tweeted Wednesday: "hey guys, I wanted to thank everyone for the huge amount of support that I have received already. Unfortunately, I can't comment on this ... harassing artists often at their home by boat should be illegal. thas all i know." His account has remained silenced since.

Police say on April 15th a verbal confrontation occurred between Currington and Ferrelle at dock owned by Currington. At some point, Currington is reported to have boarded his boat and followed Farrell to another nearby dock, where police became involved.

Daniel Baxter with the Chatham County District Attorney's Office confirms William Matthew 'Billy' Currington was indicted by a Grand Jury Wednesday in Chatham County, GA.

"Sir, On 04/15/2013 1300hrs I was contacted by dispatch and was advised to contact Cpl. E. Randolph with Tybee Island Police Department. I made contact with him and he advised me of a call that one of his officers was on at AJ's dock, and that he wanted to make Marine Patrol aware of the Incident that the Reporting party (Mr. Ferrelle) reported to his officer since it involved a boat and partially occurred in Savannah-Chatham's Jurisdiction. I got a brief summary from Cpl Randolph and he advised me that Mr. Ferrelle is a Charter Captain and that he had two paying fares on board giving them a tour when a male subject began screaming at them from what is now identified as San Marco Dr. He then advised me that Mr Ferrelle reported that when he came back by the property the same male subject was in his boat with a camera and that the subject followed Mr Ferrelle to AJ's Dock and that the male suspect got out of his boat and the verbal abuse started again along with threats that he was going to "f***" Mr Ferrelle up. I thanked Cpl Randolph for the information and I advised that we would monitor the situation. Cpl Randolph advised that he thinks the suspect involved was Mr. William Currington of San Marco Dr. Tybee advised that they were filing a report and I ended the conversation with Cpl Randolph. Later in the afternoon Mr. Ferrelle contacted dispatch again and advised dispatch that he needed to file a report of the incident and SCpl. Greg Friday responded and cleared the call.

04/16/2013 0800hrs. Upon arrival at work for my shift I checked the office answering machine and there was a message on the machine from Mr. Ferrelle. Mr. Ferrelle stated that he feared for his life because of what occurred the day before and wanted to speak to someone about the incident because he had another tour he needed to complete today and would have to pass the suspect's property again. I called Mr Ferrelle and spoke with him personally and he wanted to know what he could do in reference to the incident and what his next step was. I asked Mr Ferrelle for the Case Report Number that SCpl. Friday provide him and he advised me that he didn't get one, and that SCpl. Friday advised him that he was waiting on the report from Tybee Police before writing his own report. I directed Mr Ferrelle to the Detectives office who could offer him the proper procedures to follow for warrant procedures. Mr Ferrelle then got into a conversation with me as to what happened and his statement to me was that he was on a paid tour with two passengers and that while in front of San Marco Drive, well off of the docks and only floating with the current, his passengers advised him that the suspect (Currington) was threatening him from the property. Ferrelle advised that he didn't hear at first, but after the passengers pointed it out to him, he made the decision to go ahead and leave and that he waved as he increased the throttle. I asked him if he knew why the suspect was yelling threats and profanity towards him, and he stated he had no idea.

Ferrelle then stated that he took his passengers to Cock Spur Island to show them the light house and then he started back to AJ's to end the tour. Ferrelle advised that when he passed by Currington's property again the Currington was in his boat with a camera and that Currington came after him. Mr. Ferrelle's statement to me was "If I hadn't gotten into my slip fast enough I believe he (Currington) would have run me over." Ferrelle then stated to me that Currington again began threatening his life in front of his passengers (Witness 2 & 3) I again asked if he knew what would have provoked the actions of the suspect and he advised I don't know. In an attempt to ease Mr. Ferrelle's concerns for his tour that he had scheduled for 11am and any other incident occurring, I advised him that I would be in the area of San Marco Drive in my patrol boat so that he could pass and avoid another incident.

04/16/2013 1100 hrs. I received a phone call from Det. Rice and she advised me that Mr. Ferrelle contacted her about warrant procedures and she was unable to assist Mr. Ferrelle at the time due to the fact that SCpl. Friday didn't write a report. When SCpl. Friday was contacted by Det. Rice, he advised her that Marine Patrol was writing the report. Detective Rice contacted me and I am subsequently writing this report. 04/16/2013 1326 hrs after returning to my office to complete this report, there was another message on the answering machine that was from a Mrs. Muscleman and that she wanted to file an incident report and talk to someone. I called her and she advised me that she was the care taker of an elderly man on Tybee Island at San Marco Drive and that yesterday while he was on the dock a boat went by and almost knocked the man in the water and she wanted to file a report. I asked her who the owner of the property was and she advised a Trust Company and I asked if this was Mr. Currington's house and she advised yes. I advised her that we were already filing a report in reference to allegations that Mr. Currington was belligerent towards a Charter Boat Captain and his paying customers and that when the Captain came back by Mr. Currington got in his boat and chased them to AJ's. I asked if this was the same incident she was referring to and she stated yes. She then asked "Well what is it we can do to keep people from coming up on our docks or swamping our docks" I advised her that I had already

I had a conversation with Mr. Currington at Octoberfest when he approached me and asked me the same question. I also advised her that if the boat was more that 100 feet away from their dock, then the boat could pass at speed, but that the operator would still be responsible for the wake. I advised her that a 100ft violation is not as bad as threatening someone's life and that Mr. Ferrelle was wanting to sign warrants against Mr. Currington and she stated that "It goes both ways". I questioned her as to what she meant, and she stated Mr. Currington also wanted to sign a warrant for Mr. Ferrelle. I advised her that I have yet to speak to Mr. Currington about this incident to get his side of the story and she advised that she could arrange a meeting to accomplish this. Praying For Silas 4-22-13

A Toombs County boy has captured the hearts and minds of many--not just here locally---but all around the world. His name is Silas Edenfield--and he is battling a rare form of cancer. Tonight, the community rallied around him, in a big way.

Little Silas and his family are dealing with the news that his cancer is terminal.

But despite his grim diagnosis, there were a lot of smiles tonight. Those in attendance knew they were not only raising Silas' spirits, they were raising funds for other children touched by the disease.

"He is a real figure of hope even in trying times," says "CURE" spokeswoman, Kim Osborne.

And judging by the crowd of supporters at Smoke Station BBQ Monday, he is proof you can make a big impact at a very young age.

Little Silas was diagnosed with a rare form of liver cancer 14 months ago. Now, just 4 years old is, his battle is encouraging others to fight on his behalf.

"1 out of 5 do not survive childhood cancer," says Osborne.

"Our numbers aren't good we need more research. I think it happens a lot more than people would realize. And you don't see behind the walls here at the children's hospital here at memorial. You don't see the children that I get to walk beside, they are heroes."

Back in December, the young women of Armstrong's Tri-Sigma sorority fell in love with the little boy.

Catie Sykes says they have now made it their mission to raise money to fund research in his name.

"Honestly, for a 4 year-old, he is the wisest 4 year-old I've ever seen. And they types of things he's been dealing with, you would never be able to tell it because honesty, he just radiates light."

The group, "CURE" has been with Silas and his parents since his diagnosis. Instead of accepting the money raised here, they are giving it to the group to continue their research, so no family will have to face a losing a child.

"He has walked a difficult road, like most of our kids do, with childhood cancer. Numerous surgeries, chemo therapies, and we are now with Silas in his final days under hospice care with his family. And it saddens our hearts that our research has not been in time."

If you would like to support Silas and receive updates, "Like" his Praying for Silas page on facebook.

Boy Scouts Propose to Lift Ban

DALLAS—April 19th.  The Boy Scouts of America today proposed to change their membership policy to allow gay youth into its programs for the first time, but continue to ban gay adults.

The proposal, which will be voted on in May, comes as the Scouts carry out a widespread review of their membership policies, which currently bar anyone who is homosexual from participating.

The iconic group has been under increasing pressure from gay advocacy groups and some of its board members to change its policies. Meanwhile, more conservative members have been advocating for the Scouts to maintain the ban.

"America needs Scouting, and our policies must be based on what is in the best interest of our nation's children," the Scouts said in a statement.

Earlier this year, the Scouts considered allowing each troop to decide on their membership policy. But a series of surveys among Scouts, parents and groups that sponsor troops, revealed that most were against instituting that policy, the Scouts said.

UPDATE: BRUNSWICK BABY MURDER

Almost a week after a baby was fatally shot in his stroller, police in coastal Georgia are saying for the first time they believe the child and his mother were victims of a random crime.

Glynn County Police Chief Matt Doering told reporters Wednesday investigators are looking into the possibility that the killing of 13-month-old Antonio Santiago in Brunswick was gang-related. But Doering says evidence police have gathered so far doesn't support gang-related charges.

The child's mother, Sherry West, says they were attacked last Thursday after she refused to give money to two youths who approached them on the street. She says a teenage gunman shot her in the leg and shot her baby in the face.

Police have charged 17-year-old De'Marquise Elkins and 15-year-old Dominique Lang with murder.

Police Search for Baby Killer in Brunswick GA offer 10k Reward

Police search for boy suspects in Brunswick GA baby killing

BRUNSWICK, Ga. (AP) — Police were combing school records and canvassing a coastal Georgia neighborhood Friday for a pair of suspects between 10 and 15 years old accused of killing a baby in a stroller and wounding his mother in an attempted robbery.

The mother, Sherry West, says that two boys approached her and demanded money Thursday morning while she was walking near her home in Brunswick, about 80 miles south of Savannah.
West said she insisted she didn't have any money and tried to protect her son, Antonio, before one of the boys opened fire.

"I put my arms over my baby and he shoves me, and then he shot my baby right in the head," West said. She was shot in the leg.

Police spokesman Todd Rhodes gave few details about the investigation Friday, but said no weapon has been found and that investigators were checking school records for leads.

Several people in the neighborhood called 911 after they heard the gunshots fired, but Rhodes said investigators believed that the mother was the only witness to what happened. Rhodes described the neighborhood as safe "Understand this: There is no clear motive right now," he said.

He urged anyone with information to call Brunswick police. There is a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

Officers from a SWAT team checked vacant houses as investigators tried to find possible witnesses. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources provided a helicopter for the search. A sketch artist from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was being sent to Brunswick.

The mother lives in a rented house in the city's Old Town historic district. Beverly Anderson's husband owns the property and she said West has lived there for six or seven years. Anderson said she spoke with her yesterday to extend her condolences and see if there was anything she could do for her.
"We're just very sorry about what happened and very aghast that something could happen in our little neighborhood," Anderson said. "It's a quiet, safe little neighborhood."

Anderson said people walk up and down the street, children walk to school and families are frequently outdoors. "It's scared everybody," she said. "They don't feel so safe outside."

She said West stayed home to care for her baby, who was often spotted in his mother's arms.

"The house has a front porch with a swing and we'd see him out on the swing with his mother," Anderson said. "He was a happy, cheerful baby."

The Ohoopee is forecast to crest Thursday night into Friday morning at 18.4 feet, which could affect homes in the Joy Bluff Community.

The Altamaha River is forecast to crest at major flood stage at Everett City Saturday night into Sunday morning. The forecasted crest is 15.3 feet which would impact all roads southwest of the river to Highway 341, including Pennick and Old Jessup Roads and Altamaha Park.

Seven additional rivers are currently at minor flood stage and six rivers are forecast to reach minor flood stage this week. The forecasts do not take into consideration minor rivers, creeks and streams and earthen dams which could cause additional flooding.

Murder Case Update

BREAKING NEWS: JONATHAN COURSON OF APPLING COUNTY DENIED BOND

MR. AL GRAHAM WAS AT THE COURT HEARING HERE'S HIS AUDIO REPORT WITH THE LATEST

BREAKING NEWS: Jonathan Courson, 26, of Appling County denied bond, . Judge considered him a risk to commit additional felonies following the indictment on charges he murdered his wife Mandy, 26, drugged his 2 year old daughter and tried to collect his wife's life insurance policy after staging a home invasion claiming two masked black men invaded their home, killed his wife and left him basically unharmed.

Jonathan Courson Denied Bond

In a courtroom filled with family, friends and media Judge E. M. Wilkes first decided about allowing cameras and recordings during the hearing. The defense led by Dean Strickland, assisted by Sam Burnett and Barbara Humphrey, objected stating that the request were not made in a “timely manner”. The District Attorney had no opinion either way. Strickland further produced copies of newspapers and reports stating that such pretrial coverage may impede his client’s right to a fair trial. The judge disagreed and stated cameras would be allowed.

The second issue at hand was whether or not to allow Mr. Courson to be released on bond.
All witnesses were sequestered by mutual request from the District Attorney, Jackie Johnson and the defense. In total 8 character witnesses were called. All were basically asked the same questions:

1.      Do you believe Mr. Courson would be a flight risk?
2.      DO you believe Mr. Courson would be a threat to any person?
3.      Do you believe Mr. Courson may commit a felony if bonded?
4.      Do you believe Mr. Courson would try to intimidate any witness or obstruct justice?

All witnesses, who included Mr. Courson’s parents answered no with one exception.
Kevin Lewis called by the defense when asked stated “I cannot answer” to all four questions. Mr. Lewis has been acquainted with Jonathan Courson since his son played baseball with the defendant in Jr. High

The D.A. called four witnesses, including an insurance agent, bankers and a neighbor. D.A. Johnson established the reasons the state felt that not only would Mr. Courson be a flight risk, but that he would have no qualms about committing additional felonies and would indeed have contact with a victim of the crimes Mr. Courson has been charged with. That victim being the defendant’s minor child with Amanda “Mandy” Courson whom he stands accused of murdering.

The Judge ruled that the State had met its burden and No Bond would be granted and Jonathan Courson will remain in custody until completion of the trial.

The charges against Mr. Courson, which the grand jury indicted him on January 18th, 2013 , are as follows:

Arrest Made

A Baxley man who claimed intruders broke into his home and killed his wife is

now charged with her murder. After the arrest warrant was issued for Jonathan Courson, his Attorney Dean Strickland brought Mr. Courson in to the Appling County Sheriff's office last night for processing.   Mr. Courson was arrested after the D.A. determined there was enough circumstantial and physical evidence. We asked Sheriff Deloach if there were any other persons of interest, and he responded "not at this time"

A Superior Court judge is expected to hold a bond hearing for Mr. Courson within the next couple of weeks.  Investigators have had the Courson home on lockdown since the day of the crime.  It's expected that the Courson home will be turned back over to the family by the end of the week.

26 year old Jonathan Courson told authorities early Friday morning that two black
men had broken into his home, tied up both he and his wife and that his wife was
killed.

Appling County Benny Sheriff Deloach says his officers and the GBI began focusing on Courson after further investigation into the details of the case.
After obtaining an attorney, Courson turned himself in at the Sheriff's office
Tuesday evening.  He is charged with the murder of his wife, 28 year old Mandy Courson. The sheriff says the community of Baxley is small and close knit and said he knows both families involved. Sheriff Deloach also says that he will allow Courson to attend his wife's funeral tomorrow afternoon. "He will be in my custody," says Sheriff Deloach.
Mandy Courson was a local beautician and Jonathan Courson has worked as a
car salesman for the past three years. Courson's boss told us that Jonathan came to work Thursday, the day before Mrs. Courson was killed. The employer
said nothing seemed out of the ordinary that day.

Jonathan is in the Appling County Jail at this hour and may have an initial

appearance in court later this afternoon.  Deloach tells WBYZ, "Appling County is

a small county and with all probability this case will be tried here.  My duty is to

protect the rights of Mr. Courson and see that justice is done.  This is all that I can

say because I would not want to say anything that would taint a prospective juror

that may be chosen to hear this trial.  Any further questions may be directed to his

attorney or the District Attorney's Office. "  Below is audio from Benny Deloach of

why he is allowing Jonathan Courson to attend his wife's funeral.
