Three Baxley Businesses Fined for Illegal Coin Machine Cash Payouts

Sheriff Mark Melton reports after a lengthy investigation by the Appling County Sheriff’s Office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the Georgia Lottery Commission has taken action against three businesses in Baxley. They are being penalized for paying cash payouts for play of Coin Operation Amusement Machines (COAM). Cash prizes were paid for credits redeemed after playing the COAM on multiple occasions.
Valero located at 376 West Parker Street; Bell Smit Food Mart located at 520 West Parker Street; and Hungry Lion located at 1075 Blackshear Highway have had their license revoked and fined administrative penalties.
The fines levied by the Lottery Commission and paid to the State were $22,500.00 for Valero; $15,000.00 for Bell Smit; and $5,000.00 for Hungry Lion.
There are currently 11 businesses in Appling County licensed to operate COAM. Sheriff Melton reminds these businesses it is illegal to pay customers cash when redeeming credits.
