Walmart confirmed Thursday that five South Georgia Walmart stores would close following a report that the company would shutter 154 U.S. locations.
It is part of a global downsizing that will shutter 269 stores around the world out of Walmart's nearly 11,600 stores.
In South Georgia, Walmart said it would close Walmart Express locations in Ashburn, Pelham, Donalsonville, Pearson, and Lakeland.
According to a release, Walmart said the stores would be closed to the public by January 28, 2016.
Walmart said it would also be closing stores in Ellaville, and Alma.

The announcement comes just one year after the opening of the Walmart store in Pelham, which opened in January 2015. The Ashburn store slated to close had only opened its doors in June 2014.
