ALMA — A Bacon County grand jury has indicted Daniel Stephen Byrd, 35, of Nicholls, for vehicular homicide.
Byrd was charged with DUI (drugs) and homicide by vehicle in the first degree after a fatal head-on traffic collision Aug. 4, 2015, said Bacon County Clerk of Court Sherry Tillman.
According to the indictment, Byrd had amphetamines and methamphetamine in his blood system at the time of the accident in Bacon County which claimed the life of Jamie Holden, 24, of Alma.  Following the opening of the indictment, the hearing was scheduled in Bacon County Superior Court.  Byrd’s attorney, John Thigpen Sr., of Blackshear, said a bond hearing was held last week and Judge Dwayne H. Gillis denied bond. Gillis ordered Byrd held over for trial. No date has been set for the trial.
According to the official report from the Georgia State Patrol, Byrd’s truck crossed the centerline of Georgia Highway 32 and crashed head-on into the woman’s vehicle.
