ATLANTA, GA – Georgia DOT has awarded five construction contracts for statewide transportation projects totaling $51,673,986.83. These projects were advertised in February, bids were received on March 16 and contracts were awarded on March 30 to the lowest qualified bidder.
The largest single investment is a $34.9 million contract for 10.7 miles of resurfacing on Interstate-75 in Cobb County. The contract was awarded to C.W. Matthews Contracting, Inc. and E.R. Snell Contractor, Inc. with a completion date of Feb. 28, 2019.
A $14.1 million contract was awarded for 2.4 miles of widening and reconstruction in Richmond County on State Route 10 from the future site of Fort Gordon’s new Gate 6 to SR 223. The project will widen the route from the current two travel lanes to four with a depressed grass median and 10-foot outside shoulders, and create a new signalized intersection to accommodate anticipated increased traffic volume and changes to Fort Gordon’s access plan. The contractor is E.R. Snell Contractor, Inc. The project has an anticipated completion date of March 31, 2021.
The Army will invest $33 million for the new gate and access control road according to Fort Gordon’s Garrison Commander, Colonel Todd Turner.
“As a result of the growth at Fort Gordon over the past five years, and the projected growth over the next five years, the installation, in conjunction with the Georgia Department of Transportation, will construct a new access control point and widen Gordon Highway in support of the new gate,” Turner said. “The new access control point, known as Gate 6, will be located six miles west of Gate 1, and has been optimally located to mitigate the Installation’s expanding traffic requirements to the Army Cyber Headquarters and National Security Agency/Georgia. Our ground breaking ceremony is scheduled for May 4 and we expect the project to be completed by April 2020.”
Other awards include a bridge rehabilitation in Hall County; safety and guardrail installation at various off-system locations in Douglas County; and a quarter mile widening and reconstruction on US 78/SR 410 in DeKalb County.
The awards bring the nine-month Fiscal Year 2018 total construction contracts to $722.10 million. FY 18 began July 1.
