GBI Investigates Use of force case in Appling County

Baxley, GA (June 28, 2019)On Thursday, June 27, 2019, the GBI was requested by the Appling County Sheriff’s office to investigate a use of force case.
Thursday, June 27, 2019, at approximately 5:00 p.m., the Appling County Sheriff’s Department was conducting an arrest of Derrick Jamie Morris 31 for drug-related offenses. Deputies made contact with Morris at the Flash Food store located on South Main St. in Baxley Ga. An altercation ensued as Morris was being subdued, and one deputy’s weapon was discharged during the struggle. No one was injured by the weapon. Morris was arrested and transported to the Appling County Jail. Captain Jeff Evans was transported to the Appling County Hospital with a shoulder injury and was treated and released.
