According to Appling County Sheriff Mark Melton, on Sunday, June 16, 2024, deputies responded to the Appling County Healthcare emergency room regarding a dog bite. Upon arrival, they discovered the victim to be a 59-year-old female who was being treated for multiple injuries to the right side of her body. The victim was transported to Savannah Memorial Hospital for further treatment.
The victim, identified as Estine Castillo, was walking along Norman Circle just before 7:00 am when four dogs started barking aggressively at her. She attempted numerous times, by yelling and screaming at the dogs, to get them to back off. She was knocked to the ground and the four dogs attacked her. A resident in the area overheard the distressed victim yelling and he ran out to assist in getting the dogs off her. He was able to render aid and call 911.
Investigators located some video footage that helped confirm which dogs were involved in the attack. Animal Control quarantined the four dogs. No arrests have been made at this time and the case is still under investigation.
