Czech hired as Counselor at EGSC-Swainsboro

East Georgia State College is proud to announce the hiring of a new counselor for their Swainsboro campus, Melinda “Mindy” Czech.
  “Ms. Czech comes with a wealth of experience working with individuals and groups, and she is excited to support student mental wellness and welcomes students in need of counseling services,” said Dr. Tori Kearns, Interim Assistant Director of Counseling and Disability Services at EGSC.
  Originally from Orlando, Fla., Czech attended Georgia Southern University for her bachelor’s degree and returned in 2004 to earn her master’s in counselor education, then recently earned her Ed.S. degree in 2017. A former springboard diver, she found that she was burnt out and decided to attend Georgia Southern University to get away from her home area.
  “In 10th grade, they let me take a peer counseling class and I fell in love with it,” she said. Though she didn’t do her undergraduate degree in counseling or psychology (she earned her degree in English), she found that several things in her life pointed her back to counseling. “It kept reconfirming my love for the teen/college age,” she said of her life experiences with counseling.
   After moving around for a bit, she returned to Statesboro because of her love for the South and this area. She currently is an independent contractor for a counseling office in Statesboro as well as serving as a counselor for the EGSC-Swainsboro campus. She does family and individual therapy and group therapy in Statesboro.
   “I’ve always enjoyed counseling for the teen and college age group and, having children that are in that age group, I recognize the need for a place to talk and have some privacy to open up about struggles and have a place for their struggles to be taken seriously,” she explained. “Living in a college town, I’ve always been drawn to that group.”
  “I know there is stigma around counseling. Counseling is a place, to me, that students can come and talk about their frustrations, vent out, and learn some tools that can help them when they aren’t seeing me. You don’t have to have something majorly going on; you can come by and just talk,” she said.
  Czech has two children, a 17-year-old son and a 12-year-old daughter and currently lives in Statesboro.
  Her office is located in the Counseling and Disability Services Office on the lower level of the Academic Building near Health Services on the Swainsboro Campus. She is available Monday – Wednesday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. and Thursdays from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. To schedule an appointment, call 478-289-2182.
