Appling County Sheriff’s Office Briefly Evacuated Due to Toxic Odor

According to Sheriff Mark Melton on Friday January 10, 2020 at approximately 1:30 pm the Appling County Sheriff’s Office experienced a toxic odor that was believed to be coming from an electrical short but was later determined to be small amount of smoldering rags in the laundry area of the building. The Baxley Fire Department along with Appling County Sheriff’s employees responded to ensure all persons were safe. The building was evacuated for a short time for the safety of all staff and inmates. There were no injuries and the facility is back operational.
