Training is a top priority with Sheriff Mark Melton at the Appling County Sheriff’s Office. This week Deputies Mark Raiford, Mark Varnadore, and Sheriff Melton attended the Peace Officers Association of Georgia (POAG) Conference. Administration staff member Lisa Theus and 911 Dispatcher GiGi Cannon attended the Georgia Crime Information Center (GCIC) Conference. On August 24, Lt. Kenny Wright attended Courtroom Security training and the ACSO hosted the PRIDE Class. Sheriff Melton also held the second full staff meeting for all employees. Sheriff Melton provided an update of progress for the year and his plans for the ACSO future. Pastor Javon Anderson, of Baxley Church of God, was the ACSO Chaplin for the week.
For the seven-day period of August 18, 2017 through August 24, 2017, the Appling County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) provided the following services:
Deputies/Investigators, wrote 33 citations, made 23 arrests, issued 11 warnings, performed 11 Sex Offender Compliance Verifications, served 5 criminal, and 12 civil papers for various courts, completed 24 incident reports, and provided security for Superior Court Chambers. There were eight (8) vehicle crashes worked by deputies, with assists from the Georgia State Patrol. Deputies patrolled 6,973 miles for the period. The Sheriff’s Office considered it an honor to provide four (4) funeral escort throughout the week. Investigators with the Sheriff’s Office initiated six (6) new criminal investigations and completed or closed two (2).
The Appling County Detention Center provided protection for our citizens by safely housing an average of 86 inmates during the current period. Jailers completed 28 new inmate intakes and processed 32 inmate releases, which includes inmates from other counties that request our assistance in housing their inmates. The medical unit provided 84 medical checks for the week and food service served 1820 meals. We continue to provide one outside detail that maintains the grounds of most county facilities.
Our 911 Emergency Call Center Dispatchers received and dispatched 664 calls for service, of which 239 were emergency calls directly to 911. These numbers do not include routine communications between dispatch and units nor does it include the normal calls for training and drills.
